Why do Dissertations Need Proofreading?

Many students are unaware whether they should have their dissertation proofread or not. Dissertation proofreading and editing helps students understand where they have made mistakes and how they can correct them for future use.

No doubt you have taken a long time to plan, research and write your dissertation topic. You will have probably missed out on family dinners, nights out with friends, and stayed up until the early hours of the morning trying to finish sections of your dissertation. You will have worked hard, exhausting every opportunity to excel and add as much detail and understanding to your work as you can.

You will need to ask yourself some important questions at this stage: are there any mistakes that I haven’t notice? Are my arguments coherent and concise? Are there any spelling and grammar errors in my work? Asking an individual who has already completed a dissertation paper in academia will be positive action on your part, ensuring that your work is what you want it to be.

Dissertation proofreading, no matter how it is completed, whether by a friend or by a company, should always be done by someone else other than you. Remember from the above that you will no doubt have spent a lot of time on researching and writing the paper? Well, you are going to be too close to the paper to effectively proofread and edit your own work ” you will just not see the mistakes that are there.

When you read over your own work your mind will play tricks on you, making your work appear to be something that is isn’t. You will have written numerous essays and reports whilst in academia and you will be used to the style and tone of your writing – believing it to be clear and concise when it is actually a little muddled. Thus you won’t notice simple mistakes in your own written work, simply because you already know what the details are.

Choosing a proofreader to review your academic paper can be a difficult task. You will want to ensure they have experience in your field of study, as this will be vital when suggesting improvements in your written ability. You will also want to ensure the proofreader will edit and proofread your work for consistency as well as the usual spelling and grammar errors. Adding comments about the tone of your paper should also be requested, as these will help you improve your paper before submission.

If you have your document edited then is means the editor will adjust some of your sentences so that they flow freely and add to the overall impact of your paper. Ensuring that your dissertation paper has consistency will be vital when offering it for submission.
