The Importance of Dissertation Thesis Editing and Revision

A dissertation is a key piece of academic research that you will undertake in your final academic year. You will want to make sure that you have taken time and care to ensure that you are submitting your best piece of writing that is free from errors and inconsistencies. You want to make sure that the reader isn’t put off by the presentation and written form of your research paper.

Readers are often unimpressed when they do read a dissertation that hasn’t been proofread, edited and revised. You will need to ensure that your work is flawless before you submit it.

While your report is being evaluated, the reader looks out for a specific pattern of arrangement in your work; therefore, editing becomes very important. Equally important is the revision of your work to find out any mistakes. The following sections are focused on the importance of editing and revision of your dissertation.

Your paper should be laid out similar to that of a newspaper article. Having introductory news at the beginning, moderate news in the middle of your paper, and reviewing news that will bring your paper to a close.

Similarly, editing a dissertation report is also important. Your report examiner is looking for your report to be full of information, but also a report that has been edited and is written and formatted in a defining manner, with important points being highlighted. Moreover, they expect your paper to be free from errors and your argument to flow. So a thorough revision of the report becomes important.

Thinking of a situation where, in the past, you have used a different word that didn’t quite fit the situation does cause confusion. Mistakenly adding a word with a different meaning can throw the reader totally off balance and cause them to misinterpret what you are trying to put forward.

By not reviewing your paper fully, you could affect the overall meaning that your paper presents to the reader. As the reader progresses, your arguments may deteriorate and the reader becomes bemused to what you have written – resulting in lower marks.

You will most likely be asking how you will go about editing and reviewing your dissertation paper. Well, the main few things that you should do are set our below:

1. Editing – you should consider editing your paper well in advance of your dissertation submission deadline, as you may spot a mistake that will lead to substantial changes in your work. You should also consider editing the individual parts of your paper as you complete them.

You should also consider the format and layout of your paper. If you do not correctly edit the format of the different chapters of your dissertation, then you could annoy your reader.

You will also need to consider the relevant sections of your dissertation thesis that you will want to highlight to the reader, as you will need certain sections and areas that discuss and evaluate a number of areas of your research.

2. Revision – When you are reviewing and revising your work, which you should consider giving a considerable amount of time to, you should review each section and chapter; but also review the paper as a whole.

You may also find it easier to print off your work on paper, instead of reviewing it on the screen. You don’t want to miss any mistakes, so your work will be easier to check.

If you follow these simple steps then your dissertation will become a lot easier to read by your supervisor and should help you gain those few extra marks that you deserve. You should consider allowing equal time for reviewing and proofreading/editing of your dissertation thesis.
