the economy was great under clinton because of the internet boom. it had nothing to do with any of his policies. he did cut military spending during this time and that did help to reduce federal debt.

Yes, the Cold War having ended, and the Gulf War being over, the Clinton Administration presided over a period of decreased military spending and readiness. The resultant ‘peace dividend’ was probably spent several times over, but the high tax revenue from the dot-com bubble economy was sufficient to balance the budget in a few of those years.

Yes, it’s true. And under Bush our economy is crap and our military is broken.

Which would you rather have?

I don’t know about it, but if he did really cut military funding, it was for the right reasons. Why? There was no war under Clinton… that’s unusual since WWII, Vietnam, Cold War, Korea, Desert Storm, etc. If the military wasn’t in use, then why fund it?

military has always been adequate — we fought with Iraq both before and after Clinton. Both time we devastated the Iraqi military. Currently the quagmire is not due to a weaker military but because we are a police force there now and before we did not go into Iraq.

Yah Clinton did close down many operating bases throughout the U.S.

tincoatr @ 6:26 pm

Our economy wasn’t great under Clinton. It was in a downward cycle (just as it is now) during Clinton’s last year in office.

The military funding is actually smaller in comparison to the the overall GNP (gross national product) than at any time since Reagan was in office.

Our military was cut by a third along with the intelligence services. Something Liberals tend to forget when they say we didn’t have enough troops or that the Intel on Iraq wasn’t all true.

As I was given of, the military recruitment were more of a bunch of idoits since. Not to mess up with some of you guys here. My CO say we got more failures in this century.

Clinton RAISED the defense budget, not lowered. Republicans say he lowered it because he didn’t raise it as much as they wanted to, or spend money on the things they wanted to spend it on.

Republicans always say Democrats ‘decimated the military’. In fact the army that marched into Afghanistan shortly after 9/11 was exactly as Clinton had built it; Bush had not raised the defense budget or recruitment in the meanwhile.

In the US, we spend more money on military and weapons than the whole rest of the world combined, and 16 TIMES as much as all the countries combined that might wish to do us harm. Yet no politician, of either party, feels it’s safe to suggest we could cut military spending. Both parties try to outdo each other in proposals for increases in militiary spending.

Bush the one who has really decimated our military. We have wasted our might on Iraq. We can’t win, we can’t pull out, and Bush has no idea of backing off and trying something different. He’s shoveled taxpayer money to his buddies at Haliburton and KB&R and Bechtel in high-profit non-competitive contracts for which they are completely unaccountable. Republicans say the purpose of our military is to defend our shores, but if we were attacked today we’d be helpless! Clinton (or Gore) wouldn’t have gotten us in this situation.

If I recall correctly the military did OK under Clinton. He go a bum rap for some things, such as the downsizing (actually started during the last part of Bush Sr. administration), and also he came in on the tail end of the war in Somalia. I was actually on active duty during both administrations.

Some people here need a education. Clinton gutted the military and so did Carter. The reason we now have a military and equipment is RONALD REAGAN!!!!!!!! Reagan built up the military and funded technology. That equipment is still being used. Thank him for the tanks like the M1 and F14,F15,F16,Stealth F117,F18,B-2 Stealth and the forward thinking for F22,F35 and all of our missile and defense technology like the Patriot missile system and space defense.Even the Hummers. All this stuff.

more military personnel made it home under Clinton than under Bush.

Very true. They shut down many bases, which shut down many civilian communities. They also did things like begin an “outsourcing” program and start the “move up or move out” philosophy which is ending many 15-18 year military careers these days.

The problem with outsourcing is, the costs are not as controllable as when the costs are kept inhouse. The problem with the “up or out” philosophy is, there are MANY fewer positions available for advancement as career military folks move up the ranks. Not everyone who puts in 15 or 18 years and is QUALIFIED for the promotions will get them, because there just aren’t that many slots near the top. That means, you either get the promotion or all your years of dedicated service are worth nothing. Doesn’t breed a lot of loyalty into our military, now does it?
