Maintaining Hardwood Floors

If you’ve considered changing your flooring & have decided on hardwood, then you’ve made a great decision – just also remember that your hardwood floors must be regularly maintained.

Hardwood floors are made from mature trees, which is then treated once it is finished. But hardwood floors will allow the absorption of moisture and also become damanged if anything is dragged over it.

It isn’t ever a good idea to leave a pool of water on your hardwood floors for any longer than possible. The moisture will seep into the space in between the slates, and then swell. If this occurs even in a small area it will still be problematic, especially after longer exposures.

If any amount liquid is spilled on the hardwoods, you have to clean up the fluid as quickly as possible. Use a damp but not wet mop only when cleaning your hardwoods. You might also decide to use a floor cleaner for hardwoods. Regardless, keep from using any excess water or cleaner than the minimum that is needed to make your mop damp.

Another thing that can occur to hardwood floors are dents & scratches. High heels are rough on hardwoods – you may consider removing them and leaving them at your front or garage door to limit wear. Over time the legs of your furniture can also cause dents and scratches. A smart idea is placing rugs under the furniture to keep them from being damaged, or place felt underneath the furniture legs. You could also put a few area rugs in the high traffic areas of your home, like kitchens, halls, and the area directly in front of the couch.

Some propertyowners can appreciate the worn-in look which scratches & dents can give to their wood floor. If you’re not one of those individuals and you’ve lots of dents & scratches, then a good possibility is getting them refinished. If you have your wood floors refinished about every decade and stay on top of protecting them, your hardwoods will keep in good shape throughout your entire lifetime.
