Cubic Zirconia – The Faux Diamond
Every girl wants a diamond engagement ring. With today’s economy, getting a diamond engagement ring is a lot tougher than it used to be because of the rising prices of precious metals and the soaring prices of diamonds as well. With the metal, there’s nothing you can do but cough up the full value of the ring, but when it comes to the gemstone, there’s an option that you can use that can simulate the look of the diamond and still not break the bank.
This low-cost alternative is called the cubic zirconia. It’s comparatively low cost versus the diamond has made this synthetic gemstone really popular. Compared to the real thing, cubic zirconia pieces can cost as low as a tenth of the price.
It is impossible to tell the difference between a cubic zirconia gemstone and a diamond without using a special device. The CZ has a clarity that can be compared to the most flawless of diamonds since it has no inclusions when it is being synthesized. Another almost unbelievable trait a CZ has is that they can be made to achieve a colorless appearance rivaling even those of the clearest graded diamonds on the grading scale.
These perfections in the cubic zirconia actually work against it. It adds to the “imitation” factor because the more perfect and flawless your gem is, the less believable it is that it is an actual diamond as they are extremely rare. Unless you carry yourself with the perfect form, wearing huge cubic zirconia rings or jewels will just look fake and tacky.
Another factor that separates the CZ from real diamonds is that the synthetic gem has less sparkle than the real one. While it is really hard to quantify this sparkle factor, it’s there and it adds to the feeling that you’re not looking at the real thing. It also has a little bit more brilliance than the real thing which also lends to the feeling that you’re looking at something artificial.
If you really want to use CZ in your jewelry then take care not to use garishly oversized gemstones in your jewelry. A great example of using this artificial gemstone in place of a real diamond is as a replacement for the diamond in wedding rings when a couple can’t yet afford to get a real diamond. If they have the money in the future to get the real thing then that’s the time to have the CZ replaced.
Contrary to what people say, the CZ can also be used to symbolize love and affection. It’s all a matter of taste when it comes to the usage of these gemstones. If you can pull off the look with cubic zirconia then there’s nothing really wrong with using it.
The downside to this is that it holds no value as an investment vehicle because there’s nothing rare or valuable about it. If you really have the feel to show off or make it seem that you have diamonds, just save your money. Once you’ve save enough then just get a real classy original diamond. The feeling of having the real thing is a lot more satisfying than showing off with an imitation.
